  • - Early Inhabitants of Santa Cruz Valley
    av Mary P. Bull
    358

Seventy million years ago there was explosive volcanic activity in the Mountains near Santa Cruz Valley. Thirty million years ago the volcanoes burst forth again to create sheets of black lava. Only the ancestors of the present day animals witnessed this spectacular event. Scientists know that Paddy the Packrat is a descendant of the packrats that fearfully watched the exploding volcanoes. The main characters of his historical story about southern Arizona are Sancho and Carlos- 300 pound bighorn sheep. They watched children who moved into their valley to work and play. As people moved in, some of the animals moved to the mountains in the surrounding valley. But Paddy the Packrat stayed to build his nest of 'junk': cacti, twigs and shiny objects. Ice Age people came from Siberia with their wooly mammoths. Indians from Mexico arrived with corn seeds to plant. Father Kino brought the "rock horses" and an idea of a Mission from Spain. Chinese people came from the California gold fields to work on the railroad. The Santa Cruz Valley was fertile, protected by mountains with year round flowing water and food for the animals and people. This is a story about the life of the animals, plants and children who came to the Valley before 1900. Part of the story is told in rhymes. Children can colour the pictures and search for Sancho, Carlos or Paddy in the illustrations. Historical dates, maps, photos and illustrations tell the story of the Santa Cruz Valley in the Southern Arizona Valley.

  • - A Volunteer Firefighter's Perspective on the Rodeo-Chediski Fire
    av Gary Phillip Holdcroft
    301

This book chronicles the story of a volunteer firefighter who finds himself helping to battle the largest wildfire in the history of the State of Arizona. Starting in the tiny village of Cibecue, Arizona on the White Mountain Apache Reservation and, eventually, encompassing the entire Mogollon Rim, the human-caused Rodeo-Chediski Fire explodes and forces the evacuation of over thirty thousand people. This story exposes the friction between the United States Forest Service and the small, rural, fire departments in the White Mountains of Arizona and details the differing viewpoints on how the fire should have been fought. The author, a former resident of Tucson, joined the Linden Fire Department in 1999 as a volunteer and on June 18th, 2002 found himself face-to-face with a huge, out-of-control wildfire that threatened to destroy whole towns and neighborhoods on the Mogollon Rim

  • - From the Files of the Haunted Walk
    av Glen Shackleton
    257

Ghosts, graveyards, hangings and haunts. Is Kingston one of the most haunted cities in Canada? Since 1995, tour guides from Haunted Walks Inc. have been entertaining and educating the public with Kingston's darker history and many ghost stories. Our guides are easily recognized by their dark cloaks and lanterns as they lead their groups through the quiet streets and alleys of the historic Limestone City. In this collection of supernatural tales from our favourite haunted buildings and places, we share the very best of over a decade's worth of research and investigation. Read about the phantom of Kingston Penitentiary, who swore he would come back from the grave to have his vengeance; the ghost of the gentleman soldier, hanged on the hill at Fort Henry, or the heartbreaking tragedy at Deadman's Bay that reunited the spirits of a young couple after their deaths. These and many other chilling tales are to be found inside.

This book has been in process over a span of forty-nine years. I've been able to document many details-names, places, dates, descriptions-through letters, photos, and newspaper clippings. In some cases, details have been recalled from memory and may not always be accurate, but they are true in essence. Some stories, such as the first three chapters, were written in sequence, but many began as stand-alone vignettes. Those written as individual stories have, of necessity, repetition of descriptions, explanations, and details. There are so many people, places, and things introduced throughout the chapters of Saps From The Pines, that I hope the repetition is helpful in putting the pieces together, rather than distracting. In selecting which events to include, I've considered my audience to be a mixture of family, friends, and those interested in Colorado history. Not all chapters will be of equal interest to this variety of readers, but my hope is that those of you who have the nerve to delve into this book after seeing the title and the cover photo will find some things that strike your fancy.

This book is a journal spanning three decades, 1964-1998, and more. It is also a series of essays written during that period. Essentially, it traces one individual's development as a person. This book did not come about in the manner of most books: as the product of a long-range plan. Rather, as is sometimes the case with a child, it just happened. It was born of a compulsion to write. As I am neither gregarious nor extroverted, this journal served as a repository for my innermost feelings during those long years. Somewhere along the way I developed the notion that perhaps others might want to see what I had written: I felt much of it was important. I believe this book speaks to everyone, regardless of who they are.

Volume I records a revised record of the Gould and Talkington lines of the Hope Gould Robinson lineage. Altogether this has been the completion of a thirty-one year project, which has involved many miles of travel, endless correspondence, quests for lost relatives, a reexamination of history, and searches for lost documents and records. The work is still not complete, but it does provide a record that would have been lost in the annals of time. Within these family records are stories upon which some future family writer and historian could produce an epic on the westward movement and the fulfillment of the American dream.

I'm glad the lighthouse wasn't the keeper's home ... it was very cold ... there were photos on the walls that told us about ... shipwrecks ... We couldn't go into the tower, but I wasn't too disappointed ... that would be where a ghost would be hiding ... When a little boy reluctantly travels from Arizona to Oregon to visit a lighthouse, he eventually realizes that the towers that light the way for ships are more fascinating than he ever imagined. In Diaries of Lighthouse Children, Janet Bauer shares a collection of tales that allows others to experience the history and beauty of lighthouses through the eyes of children. In this delightful compilation of six short stories that include fascinating facts about each lighthouse, a boy who wants to become a detective helps protect the lighthouse from vandals; a lonely boy befriends an American Indian boy and learns about whaling; and a bashful girl survives the terror of Tsunami wave to help others. As each child explores a lighthouse, each learns valuable life lessons that teach compassion, appreciation, and the importance of treasuring family memories. Diaries of Lighthouse Children is a perfect companion for anyone captivated by the history behind lighthouses.

This book was created to help fill a void in the preparation and cooking of wild game. I got very tired of eating the same old thing every hunting season and when eating at someone else's home. Many cookbooks only have maybe one or two recipes on venison, and nothing on many of the other critters that scurry about in the forest. After all our forefathers ate them, why not us too?
