The Detroit Lions are roaring into the new season with a big win. And now lifelong Lions fan Barry Schumer is capturing the excitement and optimism in his new book, I Don't Believe It, We're Good! The New Detroit Lions. In this new edition of his previous book, 7 Years Later and "I Still Don't Believe It!" Same Old Lions, Barry chronicles the many lows that long-suffering fans endured during dismal seasons and terrible losing streaks. But now the Lions look poised to pounce with championship potential. So if you love sports, and if you love the Detroit Lions... then this book is for you! I Don't Believe It, We're Good! The New Detroit Lions by Barry Schumer will be released on October 15, 2023 in paperback and ebook. Here's what die-hard Lions fan and author Barry Schumer has to say about writing his new book, I Don't Believe It, We're Good! The New Detroit Lions:"This is a book I have been waiting to write for almost 20 years. Fans finally have hope based in reality, that our beloved Lions are a solid team and organization. It's time to put all the pain and frustration behind us. It's time to put all the disappointments behind us. No more broken hearts. All the credit for this rebound has to go to Sheila Firestone Ford Hamp, who took the reins of the organization in 2021. She brought in our General Manager Brad Holmes and our Head Coach Dan Campbell. It appears she made the right decision. I believe Dan Campbell will be our head coach for the next 15 years.Although this 4th edition includes some painful memories from the past, it is meant to completely support the Lions and the organization in looking forward to a very bright future. The most loyal sports fans in the USA may well be rewarded with a Super Bowl Championship in the next few years. I have never seen this level of passion with any of Detroit's other major sports teams. So buckle up, Lions fans... We salute all the men who have put on the Honolulu Blue and Silver jerseys over the years, risking injury for the money, the pride of representing Detroit and the quest for Detroit's first championship since 1957. We will always love our Lions!

She spiraled into a terrifying abyss of mental illness at age 13, and now in her thirties, Bethany Boik offers a disturbing and uplifting peek into the personal hell she has suffered and survived. In Diary of a Schizophrenic, Bethany's poetry, journal entries and letters offer graphic details and insights into the mind, body and life of a teenager and young woman who loses control of herself, causing chaos in her schoolwork, friendships and family relationships. Told through the lens of a woman stalked by suicidal urges, but determined to defeat her demons, this gripping memoir aims to educate people about schizoaffective disorder, while providing hope to those diagnosed with it, that they, too, can find peace and live a fulfilling life.Bethany describes psychotic episodes that landed her in clinics and hospitals; the stays were difficult but they helped her get the treatment she needed to stabilize her mental health. Describes the long list of pharmaceutical drugs she has taken for schizoaffective disorder, PTSD, ADHD, and other ailments.Bethany also shares the beautiful blessings of friends, teachers, clinicians, her "found family" and her grandmother who provided the support she needed-emotionally, financially, medically and academically.Bethany Boik is a powerful testament to the power of a strong will to survive despite horrific voices and visions in her mind telling her to end her life. This book will open your mind and heart to the struggles and the successes of this courageous young woman who's on a mission to help destigmatize mental illness and inspire those who suffer with it to live their best lives.

In the Extra Years by Roger Sippl is a poetry book. It's about how I spent the rest of my life after I survived, at age nineteen, Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a type of cancer that, at the time, only gave me a twenty percent chance of living further. This book is poetry. Therefore, it doesn't detail everything I did. Many events in my past just don't make good poetry. I took three companies public, and although it got me the Golden Hat Trick Award from my underwriter, Cristina Morgan, all that business stuff just isn't very lyrical, although I suppose someday I should try to make it so. But there is a little factoid that does make for a good story, if not a poem. Once, for a week-long party with my friends in the Caribbean, I chartered a cruise ship. It only had 50 staterooms, so it was a small cruise ship, as cruise ships go. Chartering it was motivated by the desire, when I thought I was dying, to just go to the beach with my friends. When I thought I was going to lose them all, all at once, that was my number one thought. Years after my cancer treatment I had some success in the software business and I realized I never took that time to hang out with my friends on a sunny day in the sand. After the third IPO I decided I was probably at the peak of things, so I declared it to be "e;The Year of Roger"e; and took my friends on this trip "e;to the beach"e; - which became "e;The Year of Roger Cruise"e; complete with logowear, fireworks one night, a toga party another, and the inevitable martini-tasting contest with talent show put on completely by my guests. I did things like that in the extra years. Perhaps all my life I was that way in my mind, but after cancer I lived it - too confident, impulsive and too willing to forget about the consequences of failure. Cancer made me more sure that nothing good was going to happen for me unless I made it happen, and further, bad things were definitely going to happen, no matter what, so I better enjoy my life right now before it's too late. Whether you call it a good attitude or a bad attitude, it made for a wonderful life. In my next book I'll fill in the blanks between the poems with prose, explain what was going on when I wrote each poem, and what I meant to say by writing it, to the extent I know. But for now, I'll leave you with just the poems, and you'll have the luxury of exactly your own interpretation. Please let me know any thoughts you have on any of the poems, or the whole collection, at roger@sipmac.com.

A terrorist plot using the obesity epidemic as a weapon of mass destruction to kill Americans. The terrorists use America's passion for food-and oblivion to the dangers of fat-to unleash an enemy within. They're on a quest to dominate the United States and the world.Joining forces to stop this evil plot are a journalist known as G.I. Jane, a hunky Special Ops soldier, and a radical surgeon, Dr. Michael Wise.Set just a few years into the future when obesity and diabetes are so prevalent that people can get dialysis on buses or at vacation resorts. An anti-healthy-eating backlash has created popular restaurants that feature an entire menu of chocolate, ice cream, and other indulgences. This backlash has also spawned an obesogenic culture of eating that includes massive portions, mega fried food fests, and a general disdain for healthy food.Meanwhile, Dr. Wise is on a mission to stop America's self-inflicted, slow death by obesity. He's asking Congress to pass his aggressive American Obesity Eradication Act, which includes appointing an Obesity Czar and imposing strict regulations such as a junk food tax, bans on fast food advertising to children, and required weigh-ins and nutrition education. Billionaire business leaders oppose it, and the Act is defeated. That propels Dr. Wise to lead a guerilla war on obesity. Headquartered in a Detroit warehouse that utilizes the salt mines and military-grade technology to evade detection, the underground LifeQuest Movement is supported by tech billionaires, the mafia, West Coast Yogis for Peace, a rural Kentucky group, and the Food Fight Posse from inner-city Detroit.Meanwhile, the terrorists have infiltrated the highest levels of government and obtained FDA approval of a "flavor enhancer" marketed as a fat blocker, but the drug was actually created in the terrorists laboratories. It's called OC-8, or Obesity Catalyst times Infinity, and it actually accelerates diabetes and causes cardiac arrest.Journalist Jeri Brewster, whose father is an Army General and whose mother is a health-advocating author, joins forces with the Special Ops soldier, Calvin "Bullet" Alvarez, in a race against time to tell the President that this evil plot involving deadly bioterrorism is killing Americans. But the terrorists have infiltrated the highest levels of government and the food industry. As a result, the President's chief advisor-along with many government and business leaders-are colluding with the terrorists. In fact, the terrorists have groomed the lead presidential candidate from birth to infiltrate America's highest office and serve as the lynchpin for their quest for global dominance. This fast-paced story has many twists and turns that explore the insidious nature of the obesity epidemic. It goes into the hearts and homes of two families, as the parents, children, and teens grapple with their addictions to junk foods and overeating, as well as their guilt, and anguished efforts to transform their thinking, eating, and health status in relation to food. And what if fast food companies took over public school cafeterias, offering not only a plethora of unhealthy fare for children's breakfasts and lunches, but also opening homework lounges and weekend community centers that welcome families to spend a lot of time there, and get hooked on the fattening food? Supporters love it; critics protest this infringement and monopoly on the minds and stomachs of schoolchildren. Will the terrorists succeed?

    av Joyce Hayes Giles

You’ve heard of the glass ceiling. It’s the barrier holding women back from breaking through to the highest echelons of corporate America. A few women are promoted to those power seats, but the realm of leadership in America’s top companies remains mostly male—and mostly white. If striving for success in that reality weren’t daunting enough, some women face an additional barrier: the black ceiling. That’s the barricade blocking African Americans from ascending into the top levels of corporate leadership, especially in certain industries where the statistics for female and black representation are discouraging.Think about how difficult and disheartening it might seem as a black woman aspiring to excel and transcend to a corporate leadership position through the glass ceiling and the black ceiling in the historically white male energy industry. We are five African American female executives who have achieved all of the above. Our objective is to offer our lives and our careers as inspirational blueprints for other women and people of color who aspire to leadership positions in the corporate arena. We have blazed new trails in the energy industry by shattering ceilings. However, much work remains. The low representation of women and people of color at the helm of corporate leadership requires a strong commitment to persevering past the many obstacles that can delay and derail a career. That is why we convened on the pages of this book to show that, Yes, it can be done! We show it through: our own personal belief systems; networking with other women and people of color in our industry; receiving guidance from mentors; committing long hours to our jobs; relocating when opportunity knocked; pursuing our education and training to propel us on an upward trajectory in our field; and celebrating the successes as they come.About the AuthorsJoyce Hayes Giles is an energy industry executive with over 35 years of experience transforming organizations’ customer and philanthropic performance. Most recently she was Assistant to the Chairman and Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for DTE Energy, a Detroit-based diversified energy company involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services nationwide. In addition, she served as the company’s Chief Ethics Officer and Ombudsman for employee related issues.Carolyn Green is Managing Partner of EnerGreen Capital Management, which she founded in 2009 to invest in late-venture and early-growth-stage companies involved in the energy and environmental industries. Prior to founding EnerGreen, she was a Vice President with Sunoco, Inc., the Philadelphia-based oil refiner/marketer.Telisa Toliver is currently GM, Chevron Pipeline and Power, has led many commercial functions throughout the energy value chain, and has been a strong advocate for the inclusion of African Americans and women in the energy industry.Rose McKinney-James, Managing Principal of McKinney-James & Associates, is a seasoned small business leader, clean energy advocate, and independent corporate director with a long history in public service, non-profit volunteerism, and private sector corporate social responsibility.Hilda Pinnix-Ragland is the CFO of AHK Global Resources and is also an independent corporate director. Most recently, she served as a senior executive of corporate public affairs at Duke Energy with national and international responsibilities. "If you want to make friends, don't hang with Rhonda." This warning is like a slap in Veronica's face, because Rhonda was the only visibly black girl in her grade.Veronica hates that people assume she's prejudiced just because she looks white, even though her mother is black. Can she handle being rejected again? Can she get through the day fearing that people will make another racial slur? When school finally ends, Veronica's excited to escape the small town and spend the summer on Cape Cod with her friend Sally. But as soon as they drive off, she learns a terrible secret about Sally's family. Once they arrive at the cottage, things go from weird to worse. How will she survive the summer with this family from hell, with its hired black help in the kitchen? How can she avoid their criticisms and questions about what it's like to be mixed? Can she find peace with anyone on Cape Cod?

When Veronica tells her boyfriend she's black, he laughs, pinches her cheek and says, "But, you're so white." Is she too sensitive, like he says? Another boy starts paying attention to her. He's mixed, too. Should she drop the boy who might have a problem with her for the other guy, who may know what it's like to live in two worlds?

Veronica's mother is black, and her father is white, but she looks entirely white, not biracial. People at school start making a big deal about it, but nobody cared before she got to eighth grade. Why do they think it's their business? Her world is changed forever. But how does she find herself in everybody else's confusion? In all the chaos?Even Veronica's best friend, Katie, who's white, acts weird sometimes, like when a black girl from school comes to the house to get her hair cut by Katie's mom."I didn't know my mom cut black people's hair," Katie said. This same black girl wanted Veronica to join her friends at lunch when she learned Veronica was black. Veronica wonders why this girl had never spoken to her before. Was it just because she's black that she wanted to be her friend now? And why had she called Katie a white-ass and huffed away when Veronica invited her to sit with them.Even the black girls in cooking class question Veronica's knowledge of greens and chitlins."Greens is black folk's food," they tell her.Is this her new life: explaining her racial background to everybody, black and white, including this boy who likes her. The first boy to like her.She doesn't know what to say when he repeats some racist things his dad told him. Is he a racist, too? Will he feel differently about her when she tells him the truth, which she has to do sooner than later!
