Tonal consciousness, in the sense of a clear intuition about which note or chord a piece of music will finish on, is as much a part of our everyday experience of music as it is of contemporary music theory. This book asks to what extent such tonal consciousness might have operated in the minds of musicians of the Middle Ages, given the different tone world found in the modes of Gregorian chant, in troubadour and trouvère music, in Minnesang and in the early polyphony based upon chant. The author¿s approach is analytical, focusing on modality and balancing up-to-date concepts and methods of music analysis with those insights into their own compositional needs and processes that the people of the Middle Ages provided themselves through their writings about music. The book examines a range of both music sources and theoretical sources from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries. This is a ground-breaking contribution both to the study of medieval music and to music analysis.

Not only scientific research, but also modern-day social life, is demonstrating a strongly renewed interest in ¿chance¿ ¿ a theme that has accompanied the whole history of human thought. This volume brings together many of the topics in which chance, or randomness, plays a significant role. The interest in randomness has been accentuated by the emergence of theories and concrete phenomena, which appear to be homing in upon the complex, many-sided, multidimensional and uncertain aspects of reality, such as the dynamics of living or economic systems, or of technological and political trends. Furthermore, in scientific and technological fields, there is a growing need for ¿good¿ random sequences of numbers or symbols for use in simulation or testing activities, cryptographic methods, and so on.

The Greek grammarian Epaphroditus, trained in Alexandria and prominent as a teacher in Rome of the Neronian-Flavian era, continued the tradition of Hellenistic scholarship in his study of Homer, the Hesiodic Shield of Herakles, and the Aitia of Kallimachos as well as in his treatise on etymology and in the compilation of a glossary of unfamiliar words. Numerous fragments from these works have been preserved in the Ethnika of the sixth-century grammarian Stephanos of Byzantium, the scholia on Homer and other authors, and, notably, in Byzantine etymological lexica, not all of which are fully accessible in print. The present edition presents a critical text of the fragments within the broader context in which they have been transmitted. Each text is supplied with a critical apparatus and a list of the more important parallels. To make the edition more easily accessible to non-specialists an English translation has been given not only of the fragments but also of longer texts quoted in the notes, features which should be of use to specialists as well. After each fragment a short commentary summarizes the results. An extensive introduction presents the life, works, and scholarship of Epaphroditus and explains the reasons for the classification of the fragments. A concordance to the edition of Lünzner (1866), a full bibliography, and indices facilitate the use of the work. The aim of the edition has not only been to set the grammarian in his rightful place in the history of scholarship but to encourage further work in this neglected field by demonstrating its intrinsic interest and by explaining methods and technical terms which are often taken for granted in specialist works. This book argues that unreasonable dogmatic beliefs are expressions of socially structured patterns of prejudice. Specifically, prejudice is explained as being produced and dispersed within the confines of the political structures governing the manner in which material human needs are created and met.
