"One of the most important issues facing New Testament scholarship today is the issue of Gnosticism." So wrote the author in 1973 in the first edition. With the publication since then of the entire Nag Hammadi library, this observation has become even more incisive. Was there a pre-Christian Gnosticism? Did Gnosticism directly or indirectly influence nascent Christianity? Many modern scholars argue that Gnosticism preceded the emergence of New Testament Christianity and constituted the raw material from which the apostles formed their message about Jesus. The author here analyzes the evidence used to support this thesis. He notes a series of methodological fallacies in the use of this evidence and concludes that clearly Gnostic materials are late and pre-Christian materials are not clearly Gnostic.A new chapter in this paperback edition brings the discussion up to date.

[This] is the most important question regarding the claims of the Christian faith. Certainly no question in modern religious history demands more attention or interest, as witnessed by the vast body of literature dealing with the Resurrection. James I. Packer says it well in his response to this debate:'When Christians are asked to make good their claim that this scheme is truth, they point to Jesus' resurrection. The Easter event, so they affirm, demonstrated Jesus' deity; validated his teaching; attested to the completion of his work of atonement for sin; confirms his present cosmic dominion and coming reappearance as Judge; assures us that his personal pardon, presence, and power in people's lives today is fact; and guarantees each believer's own reembodiment by Resurrection in the world to come.'The Apostle Paul considered the Resurrection to be the cornerstone of the Christian faith. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, the whole structure, Christianity, collapses. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:14-17, 'And if Christ has not been raised, 'our preaching is useless and so is you faith.' More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God. . . . And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile [emphasis added].' The Christian faith-and its claim to be Truth-exists only if Jesus rose from the dead. The heart of Christianity is a living Christ.

The earliest Christians who came to follow Jesus were first Jews. They had studied and knew their Torah (Pentateuch) before they had come to know Jesus. In this book, we will, in a way, try to imitate them. We will study the Pentateuch as it is; we will let it speak on its own terms and try not to filter it too much at first through specifically Christian lenses. Far too often, those lenses, smeared with a Law versus Gospel brush, have impeded our vision rather than helped it. At times we will allude to New Testament texts, but we will save our discussion of Jesus and the Law until the end. Like the earliest Christians we will attempt to come to Jesus only after we have studied the Torah and have some idea of what it is all about.- Preface

"Mr. Lockwood's exciting book...holds many surprises for the reader who has seen the Cuban reality up to now only through the distorting prism of propaganda.... [During Mr. Lockwood's latest, 14-week visit to Cuba in 1965] he had 'a seven-day marathon conversation' with [Fidel], the transcription of which, with excellent photographs, constitutes the heart of the book.... A first-rate psychological document, this book is also an historical one in that it contains information necessary to the understanding of several conversional questions, such as the priority given agriculture in the development of the Cuban economy, the dissension between Moscow and Havana, or even the intellectual road by which Castro came to Marxism. Moreover, it provides particulars up to now unknown." Claude Julien, 'The New York Times Book Review' "Lockwood gives us crowds, posters, individual studies, Fidel in every possible mood; the cities, farms, country towns - most of Cuba is in the photographs.... Lockwood's text consists mainly of excerpts from several interviews he got from Fidel in 1965.... In one way or another Fidel touches on all the events of crucial importance from the beginning of the insurrection until 1965, and the interviews thus become an explanation of the revolution that we badly need." Jose Yglesias, 'The New Republic' "The author's questions [to Fidel] are tough and penetrating and they elicited the same kind of answers.... The lively record deserves and encourages serious study." K. G. Jackson, 'Harper's Magazine' "Given the paucity of scholarly work on contemporary Cuba and the difficulty of visiting the island, the photographs, interview materials, and interpretations of this gifted journalist must go high on the reading list of anyone, professional or lay person, who maintains a serious interest in Cuban affairs and in that most dramatic and important of twentieth-century Latin American leaders, Fidel Castro." Richard Fagan, 'Hispanic American Historical Review'

If any portion of the Old Testament has come in for undeservedly scant attention, it has been the minor prophets. Their significance has been obscured by our neglect. Among the major messages of these prophets, that of Zechariah shines forth with special prominence.Zechariah's prophecy is given primarily to console and comfort weary Israel. The nation's initial enthusiasm for rebuilding the temple and resettling the land had waned. With growing opposition to the temple reconstruction, they had turned to the pursuit of their own affairs. Zechariah (along with Haggai) arduously seeks to bring Israel from their indifference to a complete spiritual return to the Lord. The prophet's pronouncement is of a coming day of unparalleled glory - a day when Messiah will rule the entire earth from Jerusalem. The book's major eschatological importance can be clearly seen for it reveals a wealth of information about Messiah and about the future and role of Israel during the important Day of Jehovah. The prophet provides this information for us in concise, epitomized form.In 'God Remembers,' Charles Feinberg brings a high level of scholarship to his study of this significant and exegetically difficult book. His familiarity with and love for the Old Testament can be readily seen in his thorough and readable exposition of the message of Zechariah. In addition to the main body of the commentary, 'God Remembers' includes an informative introduction, thorough scripture and subject indexes, and an annotated selected bibliography, further enhancing the usefulness of this important reference work.

  • - Political Leadership and Ideology in Jamaica
    av Cheryl L a King
    197

Cheryl King's study of Michael Manley's leadership of Jamaica in the 1970's is a well-written and informative study of one of Jamaica's most important post-independence political figures. Ms. King properly starts the study within the historical setting and limitations of Jamaica's colonial experience. The study then moves on to Manley's social democratic thinking and political principles, and his administration's less than successful efforts to work within the powerful chaotic international environment of the 1970's. Readers will encounter an engaging and wide ranging work of consequence. William B. Messmer, Ph.D., Drew University

This short but highly significant study is the first real sequel to Professor Martin Hengel's classic and monumental work 'Judaism and Hellenism'. It demonstrates from a wealth of evidence, much of it made readily available here for the first time, that in the New Testament period Hellenization was so widespread in Palestine that the usual distinction between Hellenistic Judaism and Palestinian Judaism is not a valid one and that the word Hellenistic and related terms are so vague as to be meaningless. The consequences of this for New Testament study are, of course, considerable.

Far and away the best book on the fascinating subject of Transcendentalism in New England and one of the best contributions to American intellectual history ever made. Frothingham knew the world of the transcendentalists - European as well as American - as did no other historian, and he brought to his interpretation not only personal knowledge but philosophical insight, sympathy, and a distinguished literary style. Henry Steele Commager An intelligent and useful compilation. It contains much material indispensable for a study of the Transcendental movement. Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.
