Praying for my children daily is as easy as a Sunday morning. When my children, Elliott, II and Elese were little, I was blessed to take them to work with me. Every morning we would stand in my office and pray. I would pray for their days and attitudes (especially that little girl people Elese. She was something fierce). It got so good to them that Elliott would run to the office and ready himself to pray before I made it there. He would gather his little self and lead that thing ya'll! This was our normal. As they grew older and into middle and high school, I began traveling across the country for work. As I began traveling, daily prayer became more and more important. I had to stay connected to my children. I realized that not only did I have to keep my A but I was responsible for equipping my children, with the tools they need to keep their A. This collection of memoirs walks the reader through the experiences of a child growing up in Omaha, Nebraska in the 1950s. Her young life in Cathedral parish centers around church, school, and neighborhood whose ever-widening perimeters became her arena of learning, mischief, and play. School stories began with the bewilderment of a five-year-old, meeting for the first time a traditionally dressed Dominican sister, her first-grade teacher. Then through other stories with a child's vision, we see the education she received, activities in which she participated, and the people surrounding her in her twelve years at Saint Cecilia's Grade School and Cathedral High School. Her stories also visit places that no longer exist, like Peony Park, Aksarben, Blackburn Pharmacy and even, sadly enough, our Cathedral High School. Although these places no longer exist, visiting them again will show you how special they were, and how much fun they brought to young lives. The real stars of these memoirs are the people that made them memorable. Usually identified only with their initials, they bring forth stories that were fun to revisit. Each person was one component in the development of a young life so different from those growing up in the twenty-first century. The all-important family, the class of thirty-five first graders that grew to 111 high school graduates, the sisters and priests that gave their lives to their God, and to their students were all important pieces in the development of this Catholic Girl in the '50s. The Book of Esther (an orphan raised by a male cousin) has haunted me from the time I first taught it as a Bible Study! It was not at all like I thought. How could this happen to a Godly teenager who had been taught scripture nightly by her cousin? Twenty years later and having taught it from 8 different sources I continued to want to find answers! Sometimes there is nothing one can do to solve an issue but dig deeper into the story - learn more about the times and the Jewish life style. Thus, I began my search! Young women then were expected to learn household chores, how to cook, perhaps plant a garden, sell items in the marketplace, be faithful to attend the synagogue, and obey their parents. Mordecai, her cousin, would have trained her more like a son! Nightly he would have shared God's word! As he worked at the King's gate, except for days of worship, she would have played a bigger part at her age in fulfilling the chores of a wife/mother. Once a young girl began her period (per Leviticus 15:19-23) however, things changed. It was then time to look at marriage. At the same time in their lives the King has sent soldiers all over his kingdom to find him a wife. Mordecai would have instantly known this as it would have been interesting talk at the gate where he worked. However, I don't believe he thought it would affect him! We see in scripture that Esther knew of him often counting his coins in the evenings and thought he was planning her dowry. Alice K. Rawlings is an experienced Bible teacher and speaker. Aarian Daniels is the founder of Lex Talk Dyslexia, an advocacy group in Coastal Virginia dedicated to raising awareness for children with dyslexia through education and community programming. Dr. Eric J. Kolb was born and raised on a farm in Nineveh, PA. His father was a professional football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his mom was and still is a cowgirl. When He was two, he and his adopted sister were sleeping in their crib when a fire broke out. His dad was able to climb into a second-story window and save the two kids. Thus, Kolb grew up knowing that God had a special purpose for his life. In high school, Kolb started with a very promising future in sports, but injuries, most likely due to muscle dystrophy, led him down an academic path. Upon graduation with a bachelor's in Math from Ohio University, Kolb wanted to spend a summer in Germany as a street performer. Kolb became a professional performing artist, but once again, his illness changed his path. Thus, Kolb went back to school, obtained his master's in psychological counseling and later his Ph.D. in general psychology.

This book is a collection of mainly Christian poems. Julie has written some others that are included because she felt they could come under the title of "Broken Treasures". As we can see in our life, in our world and in others the brokenness that sin brings about. Truly, it is only through Jesus Christ that reconciliation to God, forgiveness of sin, and the mending of brokenness comes about. When we are transformed by Christ, we are God's treasure.
