El libro de las nuevas lecturas es secuela y precursor de El jardín de los nuevos lectores (Editorial Zompopos, 2020) que fue el primer libro para un público infantil de Raúl Bueno. En ambos libros Bueno retoma el aguzado mirar sobre la naturaleza y sus habitantes que caracteriza su primer libro, Viaje de Argos y otros poemas (1964), pero esta vez la mirada demora en la pupila o en la sensibilidad infantil. Siendo parte de un proyecto doble, este volumen es una extensión poética de la imaginería infantil, concebido para un lector de más letras.
