Om An Autistic Perspective
This is a short, easy-to-read book, part of the An Autistic Perspective series, sharing how to work with diagnosed and undiagnosed autistic clients in counselling, psychotherapy or coaching.
About 1 in 68 people are autistic. Many autistic adults are undiagnosed and may not even realise they could be autistic. Any counsellor, psychotherapist or coach in full-time practice will encounter diagnosed and undiagnosed autistic clients, so it is important to know how you can best help them and tailor your support to their needs.
In this book on Working With Autistic Clients in Counselling and Psychotherapy I share the different challenges and traits autistic people have and how these can manifest and impact on the problem the client is presenting with and on the therapy and how you can work with the client and present your therapy to get the best results.
You will also have an idea of the kinds of things which clients may say and do that could lead to you as a therapist to feel that the client could be autistic. This isn't a book teaching you how to do therapy or coaching, the expectation is that you are already trained to do therapy or coaching if you are working as a therapist or coach, it also doesn't teach you how to 'cure' autism as autism can't be cured.
This book teaches you about the traits, challenges and strengths of autistic clients and how the client being autistic can impact on their life and on how they respond in therapy, hopefully helping you understanding autistic clients better and have ideas and insights for how you can best help them.
