Set in the 1980s, DCI Max Barton is an expert in detecting and arresting serial killers. In recent years he has experienced unexplained lapses in his health and a loss of analytical thinking; which is not good when you're considered the best in the business. Add to that, a killer who has evaded detection for over a year and a Chief Super who wants him gone and his problems are mounting fast.
