Claudia Marceau, sniper extraordinaire and notorious flirt, has grown bored with Tombstone and the Lazy Ravens as a whole. With her unrequited crush on the gunfighter Fiona Bishop growing ever more impossible after the inclusion of Gieo into the mix, she has found temporary comfort in the arms of the White Queen Veronica. But what she really wants is out-out of Tombstone, out of the Ravens, out of the range of the romance she can't have. On the tumultuous last night, with Tombstone burning down around her, she makes her escape into the desert night to seek out the father she is certain still lives and the freedom she craves. Her years of experience as a scout and survivor serve her well on a tremendous journey through the post apocalyptic wasteland where she takes counsel from a scorched Owl, slays a rising caste of Slark, and survives an encounter with an army of mutants that forever changes her and the fortunes of humanity. When she arrives in the City of Broken Bridges that arose from the ashes of San Francisco, she finds her father not only lives, but has become a powerful warlord charged with protecting the most technologically advanced city in human history. The maudlin French Canadian heroine becomes embroiled in a love tangle with a British sailor, a Scottish footballer, and the world's last donut shop girl. In a landscape filled with man-eating trees, giant god-like robots, and vile mutants, Claudia strives to find a moment's peace before the Lazy Ravens make their push to the west coast and claim a city with more secrets than people.

  • - Brief History of Hadhrat Abu Bakr (RA) - Hadhrat Umar (RA) - Hadhrat Uthmaan Ghani (RA) - Hadhrat Ali (RA)
av Jamiatul Ulama (Kzn) South Africa
    141

Every prophet of Allah Ta'ala had a group of followers who were his helpers and students. After the demise of that prophet, they kept alive his teachings by propagating what he had taught them. In this manner, for centuries, various religious groups survived. Similarly, our beloved Nabi, Hadhrat Muhammad PBUH also had a group of followers who sat in his company, learnt from him the religion of Islaam, fought for Islaam with him and obeyed him. These people are known as the Sahaabah RA. They totaled over a hundred thousand. It is an accepted fact that after the Ambiyaa AS, the Sahaabah RA are the most excellent people. The companionship of each Sahaabi differed. Some were closer to Rasulullah PBUH than others. In the light of the Qur'aan and Ahaadith in which the excellences of the Sahaabah RA are mentioned, the Ulama agree that the most excellent amongst the Sahaabah RA are the Khulafaa-e-Raashideen according to the sequence of their khilaafat. Thereafter are the other six Sahaabah RA who were granted the glad tidings of Jannah in their lifetime. They are Hadhrat Talha RA, Hadhrat Zubair RA, Hadhrat S'ad RA, Hadhrat Sa'eed RA, Hadhrat Abdur-Rahmaan RA and Hadhrat Abu 'Ubaidah RA. The four Khulafaa and these six Sahaabah RA are known as 'Al- 'Asharatul-Mubash-sharah' (The ten men who were given the glad tidings of their definite entrance into Jannah). Thereafter comes the rank of the Badriyyeen. The Badriyyeen were those Sahaabah who participated in the Battle of Badr. The above ranks were even acknowledged by Hadhrat Umar RA when he used to grant allowances to the Sahaabah RA. The greater the sacrifice, the greater was the allowance.

DIVAN OF HAFIZ Revised Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Hafiz was born in Shiraz, Persia (Iran) in 1320 and died there in 1392. He is considered by many of the world's great poets, writers and mystics to have been the greatest poet who ever lived. The book that he gave to the world, his Divan has been loved by millions of people of the East and West for the past 700 years and is used as an oracle even today. Hafiz was not only a unique and great poet; he was also a Perfect Master, a God-Realized soul whose wisdom and insights into the everyday and the mystical path are such that it is said one can gain spiritual advancement just by reading his book. His Divan is for all because he speaks as one who has gone through it all, from the passion of human love into the arms of the Divine. This is a completely revised one volume edition of the only modern, poetic version of Hafiz's masterpiece of 791 ghazals, masnavis, rubais and other poems/songs. The spiritual and historical and human content is here in understandable, beautiful poetry: the correct rhyme-structure has been achieved, without intruding, in readable English. In the Introduction of 70 pages his life story is told in greater detail than anywhere else; his spirituality is explored, his influence on the life, poetry and art of the East and the West, the form and function of his poetry, and the use of his book as a worldly guide and spiritual oracle. His Divan, like the I Ching, is one of the world's Great Oracles. Included are notes to most poems, glossary and selected bibliography and two indexes. First published in a limited edition in 1986 the book quickly went out of print. 565 pages. Goethe: "In his poetry Hafiz has inscribed undeniable truth indelibly... Hafiz has no peer!" Gertrude Bell: "It is as if his mental Eye, endowed with wonderful acuteness of vision, had penetrated into those provinces of thought which we of a later age were destined to inhabit." Meher Baba: "There is no equal to Hafiz in poetry. He was a Perfect Master ... His Divan is the best book in the world because it engenders feelings which ultimately lead to illumination." Inayat Khan: "Once a person has studied Hafiz he has reached the top of the mountain, from whence he beholds the sublimity of the immanence of God." EXPERT COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'."It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished. If he comes to Iran I will kiss the fingertips that wrote such a masterpiece inspired by the Creator of all and I will lay down my head at his feet out of respect." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran."I have never seen such a good translation and I would like to write a book in Farsi and introduce his Introduction to Iranians." B. Khorramshai, Academy of Philosophy, Tehran."Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of many mystical works in English into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. "Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz." Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author of his own poems inspired by Hafiz). Paul Smith is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets from the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre and many others, as well as his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies and screenplays. amazon.com/author/smithpa

  • - The Lewis & Clark Expedition through the Eyes of Their Forgotten Member
    av Catherine McGrew Jaime
    157

Now, in larger, easier to read print. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was filled with adventures and danger. Most of us know something of its travelers, almost all being familiar with Captain Meriwether Lewis, Captain William Clark, and Sacajawea. But one important member of the Expedition if often overlooked, Clark's slave York. This short story tells the tale of the Corps of Discovery from York's perspective. We join York as he shares the stories of his adventures with his grandchildren, in his cabin in Kentucky. While the setting is fictional, as well as the family he may or may not have ever had, the adventures he shares with them are based in history. From the Author's Note: "I hope you have enjoyed the story of York and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. When I started writing this book, I had been studying the Corps of Discovery for more than seven years. I always felt like York's story needed further telling. He was such an important part of the expedition, but sadly, so often gets little credit. I was able to find many more books on Sacagawea and Seaman than on York, which made me particularly sad. Most of the story you just read is historically accurate, based on many, many hours of research into the Corps of Discovery in general, and York's part in particular. With so many people tasked by President Jefferson to keep journals, it was a well-documented trip. And now with the power of the internet, those journals are readily accessible to anyone who wants to read them.I used the expression "proceeded on" as often as I did because it was a common phrase in many of those journals. Oftentimes, both Captains and at least one of the Sergeants would comment on something, and add "we proceeded on." It was clearly something that they all thought about often.Where I really took literary license was in my descriptions of York's family and his life after the expedition was completed. There is so much we don't know about that. We do know that he was married before he left to go west, that he moved to St. Louis with Captain Clark two years after the expedition finished; and that Captain Clark took ten years after their return to civilization before finally granting him his freedom.Beyond that, my research only turned up scarce and often contradictory mentions of York for those latter years. So this story is the way I would like to think that his life turned out, but it is highly unlikely that we will ever know for sure.In this book, I hoped to bring honor to York and his role in the expedition - honor that was seriously lacking in his lifetime."

I AWOKE in darkness. I sit up, confused as to where I was at. I try to stand, but when I make the sudden attempt to do so, my body is pushed back down to the gravely surface. I'm so tired and weak. How am I going to have the strength to get back up? As I lie on the ground staring up at the black sky covered in gray clouds, I sigh. My body feels heavy. When I bite my lip, I can taste the metallic flavor of blood lingering on the lower part of my mouth. I have no recollection as to how I got here, or how I even made it out alive. It was all a big blur. One minute I was pinned to the wall, the next I was out on the streets. This was all my fault. I groan, mentally telling myself that I had to stand up. If I didn't, I'd have an even bigger risk at dying than living. Once I gain the ability to get up off the ground, I run a hand through my light-brown hair and sigh. When the breath leaves my lips, the weight drops and lingers; almost as if it's saying that the burdens of heartache won't ever leave. I then begin to walk forward. My right foot stings at the sudden pressure. I conclude that not only am I beaten and bruised, but that also my foot is sprained. I walk out of the alleyway with the streetlight being the light source for my blurred vision. I was so tired. Who was I to turn to when I've done nothing but hurt others? No one. I was alone. I continue my agonizing walk up the street. Just up ahead, I see a corner store. Once I get a better view of the building's logo, I jog up to the payphone; not caring if I hissed at the light stings coming from my foot. Placing the earpiece onto my shoulder, I dialed the only number I knew by memory. As I waited for it to dial, my wrists began to tighten from nervousness. I didn't know what to expect. "Hello?" It was Dylan. I let out an inaudible sigh of relief; thankful that he had picked up the phone. I hear light shuffling in the background; indicating that I had woken him up from his slumber. "Hi," I replied shakily. "I'm sorry for waking you at this hour, I'm scared and I--" "Valerie?" he asks, cutting me off. "Where are you at?" "That's the thing," I say, exhaling a breath. "I don't know where I am, and I don't know what to do. I'm just. . ." "Don't do anything," Dylan says, now fully awake. "just stay where you're at. I'm coming to get you." "But, Dylan, you don't even know where I --" "Just trust me on this." With that, the line went dead.
