He sailed from Sydney to the Middle East in December 1914, leaving behind his world and his friends and the woman he loved-my mother Kitty Price.
His diary-written every day for the 131 days he fought in the killing fields of Gallipoli, records the horror, the blood, and the infamous blunders of the Dardanelles campaign.
Kept alive by love for his country and those who shared it with him, he survived, wounded, to fully recover after weeks in a Cairo hospital.
I have based this story on his diary, on conversations at home during his surviving years, and on my mother''s reminiscences after his death.
