Volume I, subtitled From the Earliest Period to the Death of Simon the Maccabee (135 B.C.E), begins with the earliest inhabitants of Canaan, hereditary law, and the exodus from Egypt, and continues through the Judean colonies in Egypt, the overthrow of the Acra and the Hellenists, and the assassination of Simon.
