At the edge of the adventure, Princess Wren finds herself rattling around in the austere castle abandoned by the king and queen in the Berkshire Forest. King Belodawn seems to blame his daughter for the mysterious disappearance of his wife, thus he avoids his daughter in favor of conquests requiring his person away from his kingdom. But, things are about to change; the princess has matured.
Wren refuses to remain the lost bird she became when she lost her mother at age twelve. With the aid of the cook and the cook’s handsome son, Aleric, Wren discovers her unknown dexterity with swords, and honing it, believes it will open up an exciting new path for her adult life. At nineteen, Wren finds what she's longed for, but her greatest strength becomes her captivity.
With Aleric by her side, courageous Wren acts on her belief to discover a way to escape the confines of her loneliness.Daring to leave the kingdom of Greenham, Wren runs away and ventures out to Shaw, the land of King Olerion.
