Roger Denton, Assistant Professor of Off-World Cultures at the Pacific Institute of Technology, visits the planet Pode for the first time, as a guest of the royal family of Tetepu, its largest country.
When he and Princess Sesu, the fun-loving and slightly airheaded teenage daughter of the royal family, are kidnapped and held captive at an isolated estate, there seems little hope for their survival until they pull off a daring escape.
But with hundreds of miles of nothing but jungle and mountains ahead of them, with no food or supplies, and with the worst rainstorm in the planet's history seemingly following them, can Roger save Princess Sesu - and himself - from almost certain death by hiking their way through the Valley of the Ancients and finding their way home.
