She received the Fields Medal on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 within the opening day of the International Congress of Mathematicians at Seoul (South Korea). She died (at age 40) on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Stanford Hospital in Stanford (California). Upon her death, in Iran, his country of origin, President of the Republic and other officials, politicians and the media praised her memory. Most Iranian newspapers published Mirzakhani's photographs, including without veil, to salute the memory of this mathematician who died of metastatic breast cancer she had been fighting for four years, leaving orphan her little daughter Anahita Vondráková.
