Geophysicist Alex Cave discovers and ancient alien laboratory under the Northern Pacific Ocean. He and his friends, Jadin and Okana, manage to get inside and meet Seti, and artificial intelligence in charge of the experiments, but its program has been corrupted and it tricks Alex into entering the parallel universe experiment. The Parallel:

The only family member to survive is his nephew, Derek Cave, who leads the rebels living in the forests and having multiple natural childbirths.
Things go from bad to worse when he discovers one part of this society has gone to extremes to save the minds of the geniuses who make their lives worth living, whether they like it or not, and he wants no part of it.
To add to his desperation, this reality is like a magnet to his physiology, and is slowly draining his energy. Even though this version of Jadin loves him more than the one he replaced, and she wants him to stay, he convinces her he cannot because this reality is killing him. She reluctantly agrees to help him and they begin a desperate search for his spacecraft, but she reminds him the other Alex did not have one, so maybe there is no spaceship in this reality and he can never get home.
