International Planetary Transport contacts Malone and his Quantum Detectives to investigate the disappearance of Joe Roy Peabody, better known as Helvis, the greatest entertainer of the day, lost while traveling to the mining city of Dis on Mars to perform a benefit concert for the miners.

His transport ship, owned and operated by IPT, has vanished in space.

Immediate suspects include figures of wealth and global influence: a multinet soft-porn queen, a Hollywood movie mogul, a multi-media evangelist, Helvis's own agent and promoter, and the proprietors of GeoSol, an underground company competing with IPT for the budding space-travel market, all with youthful and seemingly friendly ties to Helvis.
