Om Self-sufficiency of Staple Grains in Mexico
In order to achieve food sovereignty, it is essential to have the capacity to satisfy the nation's consumption through food availability. In the case of basic grains, its capacity must be determined through food self-sufficiency.The most important basic grains for Mexico are rice, beans, white corn and wheat, which represent part of the daily diet of society.Self-sufficiency can be understood as the capacity to satisfy demand through a country's production. In order to determine whether basic grains have food self-sufficiency and comparative advantages, the following indexes were used: Food Dependence and Self-sufficiency, Export Openness, Apparent National Consumption, and Relative Trade Balance. The results show hard data on food self-sufficiency and its capacity to generate comparative advantages, so it is recommended that the State intervene with the creation of public policies aimed at agricultural producers.
