Having traveled in a bard troupe with Velmella and Liana for a year, Jobe and Paracleus are still in love. Paracleus is a kitsune, a fox shapeshifter, who's faced trouble in the past. But when new powers emerge for Paracleus as his lover Jobe and friends are endangered, doubt creeps in as to Paracleus's identity. Jaquan, Jobe's father, shows up and disrupts everything as they face rebels, soldiers, gangsters, monsters, wizards and prophecies. Can they survive, or will they drown in the upheaval?
