They Called Her Sister

Om They Called Her Sister

As she sat in her plane seat, Susan Wilcox prepared for the adventure of her life: being a Baptist missionary in Spanish Harlem, New York City for the next two years. What occurred in those two years were events that not only changed the way she viewed herself and those around her, but what she understood of where God called her to be. Susan is actually the character name of Judith Tillman, who wrote this book, They Called Her Sister, from the extensive notes she took as part of her monthly reports as a missionary in New York. For as long as Susan knew, she felt in her spirit that God had called her to serve and share His love with the people of New York City, primarily those in poor, disadvantaged communities. After weeks of waiting to hear of an assignment, she was finally contacted to serve at Capilla Bautista de Harlem in New York. Growing up in a small, rural town in Colorado, Susan had already had her share of difficulties even before encountering those in New York. Her father was an alcoholic war veteran who didn't know how to uphold his responsibilities to his family until he came to know Jesus personally. The family struggled until God intervened in their lives, leading Susan to also give her heart to Jesus and feel in her spirit God's prompting her to New York. Fast forward to her two years, she experienced much within the city that never sleeps: seeing the slimy caverns of the subway, being assaulted, sharing God's love with drug addicts, and doing everything from serving food to teaching young children to read. The stories in They Called Her Sister reflect an awareness of how God can speak into a person's life, especially one seeking God's will, and bring them into some life-changing experiences.
