• - The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation

    357,99

In The Story of Christianity: Volume 1, Justo L. González, author of the highly praised three-volume History of Christian Thought, presents a narrative history of Christianity, from the Early Church to the Dawn of the Protestant Reformation. From Jesus’ faithful apostles to the early reformist John Wycliffe, González skillfully traces core theological issues and developments within the various traditions of the church, including major events outside of Europe, such as the Spanish and Portuguese conquest of the New World. This updated and expanded edition incorporates recent archaeological discoveries about the life of Early Christian Communities, as well as important contemporary research revealing the significant role of women throughout the history of the church. With lively storytelling, The Story of Christianity provides a fascinating and panoramic history of the dramatic events, colorful characters, and revolutionary ideas that shaped the first fifteen centuries of the church.

  • - Daily Thoughts on Poetry and History
    av Christopher Burn
    247

A daily page that provides a historical fact, linked to a well known poem and an inspirational thought or reflection.Poetry and history have always gone well together:  history has often been recorded in verse and much poetry has been written about historical events. The story of Troy might be long forgotten if Homer had not immortalised it in verse. And likewise, Homer himself might be forgotten if Troy had not existed.Historical facts, even those about kings and battles, can be dry reading but adding the poet’s view can bring life and insight. the Hundred Years War becomes much more interesting if studied in conjunction with Shakespeare’s play King Henry V.     It seemed odd to me that although history can be written in verse, and poems can be written about history, hardly any books exist that combine both historic facts with actual poems. It became my mission to create one and Poetry Changes Lives is the result.         History’s details are often more interesting to me than the main events. I would rather know Marie Antoinette’s last words at the guillotine: “I am sorry Sir, I did not mean to put it there” (she trod on the executioner’s foot) than the reasons for the French Revolution. But adding a poem that is in some way linked to this event adds yet another interest for me and I hope, for the reader also. Some poems have been too long to include in full and I must apologise for this. I hope that those wishing to read the full poem will be able to find it on the web or in a book without too much trouble. The daily thought or reflection at the end of each poem is intended to help the reader to start in a positive frame of mind. I learnt the value of this in an alcohol rehab some years ago. The daily thought does not seek to promote any cause and no offence is intended to any person.

  • - A Practical Guide to Solving Complex Problems, Avoiding Unintended Consequences, and Achieving Lasting Results
    av David Peter Stroh
    250,99

"Donors, leaders of nonprofits, and public policy makers usually have the best of intentions to serve society and improve social conditions. But often their solutions fall far short of what they want to accomplish and what is truly needed. Moreover, the answers they propose and fund often produce the opposite of what they want over time. We end up with temporary shelters that increase homelessness, drug busts that increase drug-related crime, or food aid that increases starvation. How do these unintended consequences come about and how can we avoid them? By applying conventional thinking to complex social problems, we often perpetuate the very problems we try so hard to solve, but it is possible to think differently, and get different results. Systems Thinking for Social Change enables readers to contribute more effectively to society by helping them understand what systems thinking is and why it is so important in their work. It also gives concrete guidance on how to incorporate systems thinking in problem solving, decision making, and strategic planning without becoming a technical expert. Systems thinking leader David Stroh walks readers through techniques he has used to help people end homelessness and increase affordable housing, improve public health, strengthen public education and access to early childhood development services, protect child welfare, reform the criminal justice system, resolve identity-based conflicts, and more. The result is a highly readable, effective guide to understanding systems and using that knowledge to get the results you want"--

In 1971 Dr. Theodore Kaczynski rejected modern society and moved to a primitive cabin in the woods of Montana. There, he began building bombs, which he sent to professors and executives to express his disdain for modern society, and to work on his magnum opus, Industrial Society and Its Future, forever known to the world as the Unabomber Manifesto. Responsible for three deaths and more than twenty casualties over two decades, he was finally identifed and apprehended when his brother recognized his writing style while reading the 'Unabomber Manifesto.' The piece, written under the pseudonym FC (Freedom Club) was published in the New York Times after his promise to cease the bombing if a major publication printed it in its entirety.

  • - For when you just want to stab something a lot
    av Rayna Fahey
    171

Inspired by the banners and signs at recent marches around the world, Really Cross Stitch takes all of that anger, outrage, and protest and puts it inside a decorative border . . . along with some snarky commentary and general annoyance.Stitching for public protest is not new. First-wave feminists in the US and in Britain used needlework in their demonstrations and public protest lectures during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Needlework and other handcrafts, however, declined throughout the twentieth century. But in the 21st century, there has been a steep resurgence and many are turning to crafting, especially needlework, as an activist strategy. In Knitting for Good, feminist Betsy Greer makes this point strongly when she proclaims, ΓÇ£I think every act of making is an act of revolution.ΓÇ¥Featuring more than 40 truly original cross stitch designs, the book also contains instructions on techniques for new stitchers. The projects include: - I am very upset- Brace yourself--women are coming- Too many issues to fit in one place- Nobody likes you- No you can''t take my rights, I''m still using them- Just Urgh- I can''t believe I still have to protest this shit- Girls just wanna have FUNdamental rights- Damn right we''re snowflakes; winter is coming!- Gram ''em by the patriarchy- I will not go quietly back to the 1950s- Same shit, different century- I''m so angry I made this- We''re not just nasty women, we''re REVOLTING- My body, my insatiable thirst for revenge- Down with this sort of thing-Nevertheless she persisted- We are sisters
