In this book, the editors focus on architecture and communication from various different perspectives - taking into account that the term "architecture" is used for buildings as well as in the context of computer software. Data and software also impact on our cities; raw data, however, do not convey any information - in order to generate information and communication they have to be organized and must make sense to the reader. The contributions avoid clear separation of the various communication spheres of their disciplines. Instead, they use the wide range of approaches to explore meanings - an ambitious aim that leaves the destination wide open; the reader is invited to share in this adventure.

In der Zeit des Humanismus und der fruhen Neuzeit bluht im politischen Denken eine neue Gattung, die der Utopie. Thomas Morus gibt ihr den Titel und die literarische Form vor. Tommaso Campanella mit dem Sonnenstaat und Francis Bacon mit Neu-Atlantis eifern ihm nach. Alle drei Werke werden hier kommentiert und in ihrer Bedeutung fur das gegenwartige politische Denken erlautert.Statt sich in politische Schwarmerei zu verirren, beginnt Morus die Utopia mit einer Kritik an den sozialen und politischen Missstanden in England. Drei Generationen spater setzt Tommaso Campanella die Tradition des utopischen Denkens fort und entwirft er, erneut in Form eines Reiseromans, die Utopie eines christlichen und sozialistischen Gemeinwesens. Francis Bacon wiederum entwirft in seinem Reiseroman Neu-Atlantis die Utopie einer wissenschaftlich-technischen Zivilisation.Im vorliegenden Band werden alle drei Utopien gemeinsam durchgangig und systematisch interpretiert, zugleich ihre Argumentationen kritisch beleuchtet. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die in den Werken verhandelten Themen, etwa religiose Toleranz, die Rolle des Privateigentums, die Bedeutung wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts, fur das gegenwartige politische Denken von groem Interesse sind.

This study analyzes the reception of thetheories of the "e;first principle"e;of Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes (7th-6th century BC) among Aristotle and his commentators of the 2nd through 14th centuries AD. It includes a detailed discussion of 120 texts documenting this fascinating and, for the modern image of the Milesians, fundamental Wirkungsgeschichte of the earliest philosophical ideas of Europe.

This monograph begins with a puzzle: a Babylonian text from late 5th century BCE Uruk associating various diseases with bodily organs, which has evaded interpretation. The correct answer may reside in Babylonian astrology, since the development of the zodiac in the late 5th century BCE offered innovative approaches to the healing arts. The zodiac-a means of predicting the movements of heavenly bodies-transformed older divination (such as hemerologies listing lucky and unlucky days) and introduced more favorable magical techniques and medical prescriptions, which are comparable to those found in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos and non-Hippocratic Greek medicine. Babylonian melothesia (i.e., the science of charting how zodiacal signs affect the human body) offers the most likely solution explaining the Uruk tablet.

Die Studie geht den vielfältigen Bezugnahmen auf das antike Griechentum in Literatur und Kultur, dem Bildungswesen und den Altertumswissenschaften nach, die das deutsche Nationalbewusstsein 1890¿1933/34 beeinflussten. Diese besondere Art der Identitätsstiftung wird als ¿Dritter Humanismus¿ bezeichnet und über Varianten rekonstruiert, wie sie vom Altphilologen Werner Jaeger, dem Bildungsphilosophen Eduard Spranger und dem Lyriker Stefan George vertreten wurden. Insgesamt betrachtet, läßt er sich als eine ganzheitliche, nationalpädagogische Strömung in Reaktion auf die Modernekritik in der Nachfolge Nietzsches begreifen. Auf der Basis eines vitalistisch verstandenen Griechentums sollte durch Amalgamierung ästhetischer, kulturkritischer und politischer Überlegungen neuer Sinn für die Gegenwart und ein künftiges ¿Deutschtum¿ entstehen. Eine humanistische Bildungskonzeption vermittelte individuelle wie nationale Identität. Dabei griff der ¿Dritte Humanismus¿ zurück auf bewährte Denkmuster der Zeit um 1800, stellte aber auch Anknüpfungsmöglichkeiten für die nationalsozialistische Kultur- und Bildungspolitik bereit. Damit gehört er sowohl in die Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte der Weimarer Klassik als auch in die mentale Vorgeschichte des ¿Dritten Reichs¿.

Nanotechnology is a promising technique that can facilitate sustainability across a wide range of areas. In the Wake of the Compendia presents papers that examine the history of technical compendia as they moved between institutions and societies in ancient and medieval Mesopotamia.This volume offers new perspectives on the development and transmission of technical compilations, looking especially at the relationship between empirical knowledge and textual transmission in early scientific thinking. The eleven contributions to the volume derive from a panel held at the American Oriental Society in 2013 and cover more than three millennia of historical development, ranging from Babylonian medicine and astronomy to the persistence of Mesopotamian lore in Syriac and Arabic meditations on the properties of animals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials constructed from metal ions/clusters and organic linkers, combining the merits of both organic and inorganic components. Dieser diesseitigen Pflicht entsprechend gibt es keine Friedhofe; die Graber saumen die Straen auerhalb Athens, damit Passanten vor ihnen halten und das Geras thanonton vollziehen.Die geometrischen Graber zeigen Bilder der rituellen Ehrung des Toten, der namenlos bleibt. Notions of crisis have long charged the study of the European avant-garde and modernism, reflecting the often turbulent nature of their development. Throughout their history, the avant-garde and modernists have both confronted and instigated crises, be they economic or political, aesthetic or philosophical, collective or individual, local or global, short or perennial.¿The seventh volume in the series European Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies addresses the myriad ways in which the avant-garde and modernism have responded and related to crisis from the late nineteenth to the twenty-first century. How have Europe¿s avant-garde and modernist movements given aesthetic shape to their crisis-laden trajectory? Given the many different watershed moments the avant-garde and modernism have faced over the centuries, what common threads link the critical points of their development? Alternatively, what kinds of crises have their experimental practices and critical modes yielded?¿The volume assembles case studies reflecting upon these questions and more from across all areas of avant-garde and modernist activity, including visual art, literature, music, architecture, photography, theatre, performance, curatorial practice, fashion and design.

Classicizing Christian poetry has largely been neglected by literary scholars, but has recently been receiving growing attention, especially the poetry written in Latin. One of the objectives of this volume is to redress the balance by allowing more space to discussions of Greek Christian poetry. The contributions collected here ask how Christian poets engage with (and are conscious of) the double reliance of their poetry on two separate systems: on the one hand, the classical poetic models and, on the other, the various genres and sub-genres of Christian prose. Keeping in mind the different settings of the Greek-speaking East and the Latin-speaking West, the contributions seek to understand the impact of historical setting on genre, the influence of the paideia shared by authors and audiences, and the continued relevance of traditional categories of literary genre. While our immediate focus is genre, most of the contributions also engage with the ideological ramifications of the transposition of Christian themes into classicizing literature. This volume offers important and original case studies on the reception and appropriation of the classical past and its literary forms by Christian poetry.
