At its core, democracy is based on the principles of popular sovereignty, political equality, and majority rule. In a democratic system, the people have the power to choose their leaders and to participate in the decision-making process. This can be done either through direct democracy, where citizens vote on laws and policies directly, or through representative democracy, where citizens elect officials to represent them in the decision-making process
