George Washington, the USA's first president, was the one indispensible man in both the nation's independence and the formulation of its government. That said, he is too often seen as a stick figure--a man with no formal education, reliant to a great degree on others for his ideas and understanding--often reduced to the story about chopping down the cherry tree or seen only as the face of President's Day. George Washington: Man and Monument fleshes out this picture for students of the Early Republic, showing how Washington, as a young man, developed a set of core values that shaped the man he later became.
