Orphan Hema Pattni wants nothing more than to escape from her cold and unapproving aunt. When an au pair job appears in The Lady, seeking someone who speaks both French and Gujarati, Hema jumps at the opportunity to get away from her unhappy childhood home.
At first, Hema's new post in southern France seems like a dream come true - the family welcomes her with open arms, and her bright, inquisitive pupil, Amelie, fills her days with satisfaction. Even better, when her dashing employer, the wealthy and reticent Rahul Raichura, arrives at the estate, Hema finds herself drawn to his old-fashioned chivalry and twinkling smile.
As Hema's attraction toward her employer grows, so does her love for Amelie, and soon, she begins to wonder if she's finally found her place in the world. But just as hope sets in, a series of strange happenings threatens the summer's perfection. As mysterious sightings of a darkly dressed woman increase, Amelie begins to talk of seeing the mother who is supposed to be dead. Determined to uncover the truth, Hema suspects the Raichuras may be hiding a secret - one even more serious than her own. Worst still, Rahul's mother and the French housekeeper leave suddenly, and the couple are left alone to look after Amelie.
