Om Silk Purses
In 'The Mayor of Garret' (1764), Samuel Foote, a Cornish dramatist, actor and theatre manager, wrote, "Who can make a purse out of a sow's ear?" And when our heroine's mother tells our heroine her grandma can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as our heroine is going out to play, as usual, our heroine doesn't know why or what her mother meant by what she said. And so, she does what she always does, and sets out to find out if anyone else will explain it to her!
Think about what you think our heroine's mother meant, as you practice reading skills and build your reading word vocabulary through word recognition, word repetition and rhyme, all of which you will find on the pages of this fun, 'learn to read' book written and illustrated by the award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan, in memory of her Swedish mother, sweet Lorraine.
