Om The Painter Angelos and Icon-Painting in Venetian Crete
The sixteen studies in this book include six specially translated from Greek and another two published here for the first time. They deal with the art of painting in Crete in the 15th century, when the centre of Byzantine artistic production migrated from Constantinople to Candia, the capital of Venetian-occupied Crete. The main focus is on the painter Angelos and the icons he painted or which can be assigned to him, and particular attention is given to the archival documents that illuminate his life and career, and shed light on the trade in icons.
